Hi Bill, here are a few advantages of a chrome cobolt denture plate: reduced cost, far less than a bridge but more expensive than an acrylic plate. It is removable, so you can take it out and clean it, repair it or replace it. You can add more denture teeth to it, in the event you loose more teeth. It is a tooth and tissue-borne appliance, which means that the occlusal forces are distributed amongst the anchorage teeth and the gum. If there is massive bone loss after extraction a pink acrylic can be used to recreate the appearance of gum. Disadvantages: it relies on clips to retain it in the mouth and these are sometimes visible or may interfere with mastication. It is not as stable as a bridge and if the mouth changes it may become loose. Relines may be necessary at an additional cost. It may be uncomfortable to clip and un-clip the appliance in and out of your mouth. If you have triangular shaped teeth in front, the "undercuts" cannot be filled with any material, else it will interfere with the insertion. This may create unsightly triangular gaps between your anchorage teeth and the denture teeth. Advantages of a bridge: It is permanently glued to your existing teeth, so it may feel like your own teeth. You may be able to cosmetically improve your smile, especially if the natural teeth are heavily filled or stained. You may choose to have an all-ceramic bridge, such as our “lava” bridges, which means that you will not have any metal in your mouth. Mastication, taste and speech may be improved. Confidence and the sense of well-being may be improved, because there are no movable parts in the mouth. Occlusal forces are greater, which means you can bite harder.
Disadvantages of a bridge: More costly. You will have to have your anchorage teeth filed into cone-shaped stumps. 6% of teeth do not like this and may die, which means that you will need a root canal treatment at an additional cost. Possible pain, inflammation and complications may occur. Longer treatment time is needed. If the bridge breaks, for some reason, repairs can be expensive and the bridge may need to be replaced. You will have to see a hygienist or dentist regularly to ensure longevity of the bridge. If an anchorage tooth (abutment tooth) underneath the bridge decays, the entire bridge or a section will have to be replaced. There may be other pros and cons not mentioned here, but these are a few that come to mind.
I do recommend that you see us for a price, because I do not know exactly what needs to be done. A dentist will have to formulate a dental treatment first. However, to give you an idea- a three-tooth bridge that replaces one tooth may cost $4500 as opposed to a chrome-cobolt denture replacing one tooth at a cost of $2100. An implant replacing one tooth may cost $5000. These are only rough estimates. Regards Michael T. Please call us for an appointment or register online and we’ll call you.
