Hi Jodie. This is not uncommon. I have seen many patients disgruntled because their teeth have moved back to their original position. It is important to splint the teeth together with a wire or for patients to wear a retainer for a long period after their orthodontic treatment. Now you are looking for straight teeth without orthodontics. This can only be achieved by altering the tooth shape. The tooth is filed away and a veneer or crown is glued onto the tooth. The amount of filing will depend on the angle of the tooth. Say a top tooth is leaning inwards towards the palate, than a veneer can be glued to it without any filing. If a top tooth is leaning towards the lip, than the tooth has to be filed away so that a veneer will straighten the tooth. However, if a top tooth is leaning very far outwards (buck) towards the lip, then a crown or even a root canal treatment may be necessary to rectify the angle. There are different degrees of risks associated with each one of these procedures and you will need to outweigh whether the treatment is worth it or not. This will be explained to you in great detail. The other concern is the gum. If a top tooth is leaning towards the palate, the gum is usually lower and surgery may be required to even out the level to its neigbour. If a top tooth is leaning forwards the lip the gum will appear higher and you may require surgery on the gum of its neighbour to even out the level of gum. There are many options and we’ll be happy to look at your mouth. Usually we do a plaster of Paris cast and re-manipulate the teeth with waxes to determine a possible outcome. You can register online and we’ll call you. Regards Michael.
