A veneer is a thin porcelain shell that is cemented on the front surface of the tooth. A tooth with a veneer on is only indicated in a low stress situation. It can rectify colour and appearance of tooth alignment, but the tooth is still prone to decay on all the other exposed surfaces, eg the back of the tooth. Veneering is a far more conservative treatment (less risky) as less of the tooth is ground away in the process.
A crown is a ceramic tooth-like shell or cap that is glued over the entire tooth (which has been reduced in size). A crown protects the overall dimensions of the tooth from decay and is indicated for complete restoration of a damaged or diseased tooth. The crown will usually have greater colour change and tooth alignment and is far stronger.
Both veneered and crowned teeth do not eliminate disease under the gum line.
Which one is better depends on your individual situation. We are happy to make a no obligation free consultation to discussion your options with one of our dentists. Please contact me on 361 2060. Regards Wolfgang |
