Hi Meegan. A root canal treatment is a procedure where the root canal is cleaned out and filled with a biocompatible material in order to prevent infection. If this is not done correctly you may get an abscess and loose the tooth. After the root canal treatment you have a choice of either building up the tooth with a post and crown, or you may choose to leave it short and have a denture tooth over the stub. We call this an overdenture. You may even choose to have a post with a ball attachment inserted into the root, so that your denture can clip onto the root. This is similar to an implant denture. If the tooth is loose and an x-ray will determine this, your dentist may suggest extracting it. The general rule is health first then appearance, so adding a new denture tooth over the top is like building a house on a bad foundation. Feel free to ask more questions. Regards Michael.
